review World Of Women prose, poetry, plays, performance Review of 2 November 2000 performance at the House Of Blues Cafe, 47 Lake St, Northbridge WA Around 30 to 35 people gathered at the House Of Blues Cafe for a highly entertaining, fun, and moving, World Of Women performance on 2 November 2000. Our first guest performer, Pascale Mich¾le, gave a resounding, powerful and heartfelt performance with songs in French (La Vie En Rose, C'est L'amour), French and English (Autumn Leaves) and a song which was a mixture of haunting sounds. Pascale was born in Paris and commenced singing professionally at the age of 17. She moved to Perth and has sung in a range of venues and in numerous festivals in Western Australia. She starred in Baron Production's 'Clowning Around' working alongside Ernie Dingo, which she says was the highlight of her career. She formed a three-piece band called 'The French Connection' and toured Australia for twelve months. She returned to Paris to perform in a French Cabaret, 'La MÛme Piaf' at Caf¾ du Nord. Her repertoire includes both French and English ballads, jazz, blues and original compositions. Our next performer was Brigid Lowry. The first poem she read was about the day she discovered her poetry while dressed in her blue kimono. She asked the question, does a loaf of bread need a web site? Other poems were mostly about women, in particular a poem to her mother on Mothers Day 1992. We heard how a hat can bring you to the brink of becoming someone else and that Brigid loves a bottle of red. She said the highlights of her career were being included in a Buddhist book, 'What Book', among authors like Jack Kerouac, and finding out that one of her poems had been written out in full on a toilet wall in the Claremont Arts School. Brigid writes poetry, short fiction, and novels for young adults. Her third such book, 'Follow The Blue' is due out with Allen & Unwin in April, 2001. She has been a recipient of Category B Fellowship Literature Board, and many other prizes. She has an MA in Creative Writing and teaches at Curtin University. Cecilia Karafilis was next. She has been writing since she was 17 and has developed a multitude of songs/pieces, predominantly for flute and keyboard, and music for plays and short films. She is currently performing with Rare Earth, a 4-piece folk rock band. At WOW, she played a selection of varied songs/pieces featuring - flute (which took us to Ireland, the Andes and through Europe with Bach), keyboard and vocals. The songs she sang, some without instrumental accompaniment, included: a song of the story of Jennifer and Martin together in love, a song of a young man who was looking for his lady, and a Tracey Chapman song 'Behind The Wall'. Jaya Penelope who had that very day completed her degree in Creative Writing at Curtin University, performed her first guest reading. Jaya is a writer and poet, and is the founder of Woven Words, one of Fremantle's most popular poetry readings. She is also a member of the Reclaim Poetry collective. Jaya draws her inspiration from fairytales, her practice of Buddhism, and everyday life. The first poem she read was about her dancing pants that seemed to have a life of their own, and certainly made the wearer's life interesting. She also read a short story about a man wearing a shawl, carrying a stick and a bowl who drifted in and out of her life and told stories while preparing and cooking vegetables. Who could not fall in love, even if only for a while? Her visual, imaginative work held us spellbound throughout her performance. We were delighted to find that several people had put their names down for the open reading/performing section. Bette Parker/poetry, Ruth Parker/guitar and songs, Aminah Hughes/poems, guitar and songs, and Reed & Read/poems with a saxophone backing. Maureen was convinced by particular people in the audience, to sing a certain rap song that was caught on film at S11 in Melbourne. And it was there that another fantastic evening of WOW ended. |
